Clearing the site

A huge amount of work has taken place to get the site ready to allow us to allow the community in. Having laid untouched for many years the area was overgrown, and the fruit trees neglected. There was (and still is) a lot of rubbish on site, and a plan had to be formulated on how to safely and effectively dispose of this. Some items, like full gas canisters, have been sold to raise much needed funds. A large quantity of CDs containing confidential information have been destroyed and safely disposed of. The fruit trees were pruned in January 2021 and are now in much better shape.

The site is not yet safe enough to allow us to open the gate and let the community use their space. There are many trip hazards still, and the ground is very uneven. Can we ask that you keep out of the site until we have made the area safe. This is for your and your family's safety.

The left hand side of the field was sold by Mr and Mrs Roberts to a property developer late in 2021. They started clearing their site, so they could get an idea of what was there. While they had their massive agricultural machinery on site they very kindly cleared the Holt area of overgrown bramble patches and rough grass. Many, many thanks to Jamie Vincent, Bill Jones and team for this - their massive mower made short work of the rough vegetation, just leaving us to deal with the bits the mower couldn't get in to.

Following a grant from Mendip Community Fund we were able to pay to have the overgrown hedge professionally laid, and very smart it looks too. Many thanks to Mike Read, Josh and team for the hard work they put in to do this. 'All' we have to do now is deal with the rubbish.... Prior to the hedge being laid we had to remove not one, but two stock fences tangled in the hedge. Many thanks to Jim, Richard and Bob for completing this at short notice. As the hedge is gappy in places 50 native hedging plants have been ordered to supplement the old hedge, and these will go in as soon as they arrive.
